EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) - A woman has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly causing a traffic collision in San Diego County that killed a U.S. Forest Service firefighter.
U-T San Diego reports (https://bit.ly/OIIE97 ) 22-year-old Natasia Ray Wood is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter for the Oct. 3 death of37-year-old Darin Steffey.
According to testimony Friday, Wood lost control of her SUV and crossed into oncoming traffic hitting Steffey’s motorcycle.
The SUV’s data recorder showed the vehicle was traveling 73 mph before the crash. The area has a 55 mph speed limit.
Deputy Public Defender Beth Ulch argued the felony charge should be reduced because her client didn’t act with gross negligence and wasn’t under the influence. But the judge declined.
Wood faces up to six years in prison if convicted.
