NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - The state Department of Labor has cited New London for violations contributing to a hazardous work environment at a transfer station where a man died after apparently falling into a trash compactor.
The Day of New London reports (https://bit.ly/1lU1tBB ) that the agency fined New London $9,000 for a “willful” violation related to not having railings protecting against a fall of more than 4 feet in the compactor area.
An aide to Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio did not immediately respond to after-hours phone and email messages seeking comment.
Floyd Smeeton, a city resident, died Jan. 30 after apparently falling into the compactor. His death prompted the state inspection.
Federal health and safety inspectors also issued a citation and fine against the city for not providing a safe workplace for employees who work near the unguarded compactor pit.
