The death of the Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Sr. has spurred a new sales pitch at a local watering hole on historic U Street in the nation’s capital.
“Westboro Baptist Church Founder Fred Phelps is finally dead,” a sign says outside the Codmother bar, a no-frills fish and chips joint. “This calls for a celebration.”
Mr. Phelps, who led anti-gay protests, including at the funerals of military service members, died at age 84 on Wednesday night, according to family members.
The sign on U Street, which has become increasingly gay friendly, sits next to another billboard for a new bar located a floor above that is apparently in a dispute with the landlord over its name: “The Handsome Cock,” a self-described “dive bar” sporting a rooster logo on its Facebook page.
