RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say they have a confession from a stepson saying he “whacked” a former Lake Elsinore City Councilman who was stabbed and slashed to death in his home last year.
Simon Cortez was charged Wednesday with the murder of 76-year-old George Alongi.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise (https://bit.ly/1hKzOAy ) says Thursday that a court document indicates Cortez was recorded last month in jail, where he’s doing time for a drug charge.
The document claims Cortez said of Alongi: “He beat my mom and put her into the hospital. I whacked him.”
Cortez allegedly says he wore gloves, shaved his body to avoid leaving hair at the crime scene and threw away the murder weapon, a utility knife.
Cortez has yet to enter a plea, and prosecutors and deputies didn’t know whether he’s hired an attorney.
