MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama lawmakers have yet to compromise on a state education budget with time dwindling for this year’s legislative session.
A conference committee of House and Senate members met Thursday to try resolving differences between the different versions of the budget passed by the House and Senate. The committee’s goal was to get a budget approved Thursday, but it couldn’t get an agreement that had broad support.
Senate budget committee Chairman Trip Pittman says funding education employees’ health insurance is a concern. He says the Legislature is trying to determine the amount needed to avoid a premium increase for education employees.
The Legislature is taking off next week. That means the budget will be pending when lawmakers return April 1 for their final three meeting days.
