TAGHKANIC, N.Y. (AP) - The second barn fire in a year has killed nearly three dozen animals at a Columbia County hobby farm.
Anthony Macri tells the Albany Times Union (https://bit.ly/1gKMyXm ) that the fire broke out shortly after his 69-year-old father, Joe Macri, helped two of his Nubian goats deliver babies in the newly-built barn Friday night.
The fired killed the baby goats and 20 pregnant females, as well as small horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, and rabbits.
Macri said the farm was his father’s retirement dream and he’s devastated by the loss.
An investigation is ongoing, but the son said the fire is not considered suspicious.
A fire that burned down the previous barn was attributed to a faulty heater. Macri said there was no heater in the new barn.
