LONDON (AP) - Former England defender Sol Campbell has accused England’s Football Association of racism, claiming he would have captained England for more than a decade if he was white.
Campbell, who is black, made 73 international appearances but was only captain three times for friendly matches.
The former Tottenham and Arsenal player has authorized a biography being serialized in the Sunday Times newspaper, which includes the quote: “I believe if I was white, I would have been England captain for more than 10 years … I think the FA wished I was white.”
Campbell insists he had the “credibility, performance-wise to be captain.”
There was no immediate response from the Football Association.
