TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey judge has overturned six-month jail sentences for an Ocean County couple in an animal cruelty case.
The judge on Tuesday sentenced 56-year-old Keith Morgan to 90 days of house arrest and five days of community service. His wife, Shauna Kennedy-Morgan, received a year probation and 30 days of community service.
The Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/Ntc2PO ) reports about 35 people voiced their opposition to the ruling.
The couple admitted dumping a 15-year-old cocker spaniel named Sammy in a trash bag.
Keith Morgan had initially been hailed as a Good Samaritan after claiming he had discovered the dog in a trash bag on the side of the road. But authorities discovered the dog was registered to someone in the couple’s home.
The dog has since recovered.
