Michigan gets $30 million in public housing grants

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Federal housing authorities have awarded about $30 million to fix Michigan’s public housing units.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shawn Donovan announced Wednesday that the money will go toward major improvements, such as replacing roofs, old plumbing and electrical systems. The funding also is used to boost energy efficiency.

Detroit’s public housing agency gets $8.3 million, Flint’s get $1.6 million and Lansing’s gets $1.3 million.

The grants come through the department’s Capital Fund Program. It provides annual funding to about 3,100 public housing authorities nationwide.

Donovan says in a statement that the money is important but says he knows it won’t “be enough to meet the tremendous backlog of capital needs.”

HUD says the nation loses about 10,000 public housing units because of disrepair.
