LAS CRUCES. N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces woman has been arrested for allegedly shaking her infant son and causing him to be hospitalized.

Las Cruces police say 22-year-old Marisela Beltran is being held on suspicion of intentional child abuse.

They say Beltran’s 6-month-old son was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center about 5 a.m. Tuesday because he was crying and vomiting.

Beltran initially told hospital staff her baby slipped out of a car seat March 13 and struck his head on the ground.

Detectives say the baby appeared developmentally delayed and was unable to support his head as would be expected from a child his age. That led them to believe he was likely unable to wiggle his way from a car seat.

Investigators say Beltran allegedly shook him twice on Monday night.
