CAMPBELL, Calif. (AP) - A homeless man arrested in the stabbing death of a San Francisco Bay Area teenager says he acted in self-defense.
Todd Tharp said in interviews from Santa Clara County Jail on Monday that 16-year-old Ivan Diaz Amezcua and his friends jumped him for no reason near a baseball field in Campbell on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Tharp told KTVU-TV (https://bit.ly/1izFIXM ) he was kicked in the head and struck with a bottle. He said he pulled out his hunting knife in self-defense.
Amezcua was stabbed and later died from his injuries.
Tharp also suffered injuries, but was treated and then arrested on suspicion of murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Police are investigating whether he acted in self-defense.
