SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Springfield police officer is in critical condition after an off-duty car crash.
A department spokesman says Officer Juan Taveras was taken to Baystate Medical Center following the single-vehicle crash just before 10 p.m. Monday and remained in critical but stable condition on Tuesday.
The investigation indicates that Taveras was driving south on Maple Street when he struck the median. The car spun out of control, crossed lanes and struck a tree.
The investigation is ongoing but speed could be a factor.
The 26-year-old Taveras has been a full-time Springfield officer since December 2010, and before that had been a cadet since 2006.
