PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - It didn’t take investigators long to bring charges against a former state police chief because he didn’t dispute the allegations.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Andrew Demers made a “full admission” to detectives about sexual contact with a 4-year-old relative over the past several months.

The 73-year-old Demers is free on $5,000 cash bail after being charged Monday with unlawful sexual contact with a child younger than 12. If convicted, he faces as much as 10 years in prison.

Defense lawyer Walter McKee told the Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/OyHP2N ) that he will be looking into the circumstances of Demers’s statement to investigators, including “how he was questioned, where he was questioned and his mental condition at the time.”

Demers didn’t return a message left at his home.
