BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - Scholarships are being awarded to 203 students by the Calista (Cha-LIS’-tuh) Heritage Foundation.

KYUK (https://is.gd/733IuJ) says the scholarships total $177,000.

The foundation is the nonprofit subsidiary of Calista Corp., the Alaska Native corporation for the Bethel region. The corporation has more than 12,000 shareholders.



According to officials, the scholarship recipients are Calista Corp. shareholders or their descendants.

The scholarships are being awarded for the spring semester and represent 41 of the 56 villages in the Calista region.

Officials say $3.5 million has been distributed through the scholarships to date.
