DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - The Dothan City School Board has approved a plan to lease iPads and iPad minis for students in grades 4 through 12 beginning next year.

The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1j1EWRF ) the board voted 4-2 Monday to approve leasing the devices, which are expected to cost about $678,000 per year over a four-year period.

Board member Jimmy Addison voted against the proposal citing concerns over additional costs associated with the devices, including technical support. Brenda Guilford, another board member who voted against the proposal, said she’s in favor of providing students with more technology but wanted more time to study the matter.

Board member Chris Maddox says providing iPads is essential to students having a modern, relevant education.

Officials say each student will pay an annual $30 user fee.
