CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - An administrator in the Wyoming Department of Family Services says she is running for state superintendent of public instruction.
Jillian Balow is the first Republican to announce for the position. She told her plans to the Casper Star-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1edq9DB) on Monday and plans a formal announcement Thursday.
The other state superintendent candidate so far is Democrat Mike Ceballos, a retired phone company executive from Cheyenne.
Current State Superintendent Cindy Hill is not seeking re-election. Instead, she has mounted a Republican primary challenge against Gov. Matt Mead as he seeks re-election.
Hill filed suit last year to contest a law that stripped most duties from the state superintendent. The Wyoming Supreme Court in January ruled that the law is unconstitutional and remanded the case to district court for further proceedings.
