PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - One of Oregon’s lowest-performing schools might move to year-round calendar to combat what’s known as the summer slide.

If the switch is made, The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/LiSI4k ) that students at Rosa Parks Elementary in North Portland would have to take some classes in June, July and August.

Studies show that summer breaks hurt the academic performance of low-income students more than kids from wealthier backgrounds because they have less access to learning opportunities outside of school.

Under the proposed calendar, students would have two weeks of class in June and July, and attend school for most of August.
