CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) - A man is dead after a fire at a Chanhassen motel.

The fire department arrived at the Brookside Motel shortly after 2 a.m. Monday and could see heavy fire coming from the windows of a twin unit.

Chanhassen Fire Chief John Wolff says a man he describes as elderly died in the fire. One man escaped safely.

The cabin-style motel provides low-income housing, and there are working smoke detectors in the units. But Wolff says there were no sprinklers inside, which could have made a difference.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
