CARROLTON, Va. (AP) - A camper stranded by a rising tide on Ragged Island near Carrolton has been rescued by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard says 33-year-old Anthony Gontarz called 911. But a Carrolton Volunteer Fire Department boat crew couldn’t rescue him due to weather conditions and his location.

The fire department contacted the Coast Guard around 1:30 a.m. Monday and asked for assistance.

About two hours later, the crew of an MH-60 Jayhawk from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina hoisted Gontarz from the island into the helicopter. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Newport News.

The Coast Guard says Gontarz is in good condition.
