NEW YORK (AP) - Police have identified a 5-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car in Brooklyn.

They say Rashard Charles was hit just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Empire Boulevard in the Crown Heights neighborhood.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say a preliminary investigation determined the boy was crossing mid-block with his mother when he was struck by a double parked minivan that was backing up in the roadway.

They say the driver fled the scene but returned later and was placed under arrest.

Police identified the driver as 23-year-old Elizabeth Mayard of Brooklyn. They charged her with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and reckless driving.

It wasn’t immediately clear if she had a lawyer.
