BRICK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an elderly woman and her grandson were seriously injured when a fire broke out at in a senior citizen community in southern New Jersey.

The Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1dgmz7S) reports that 81-year-old Irene Scarnechia, who lived in the unit where the fire started, was hospitalized in critical condition with burns to her throat and lungs, Her 18-year-old grandson, James Plunkett, who also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

It’s not yet clear what caused the fast-moving fire, which broke out around 9:15 p.m. Sunday in a unit at the Laurelton Gardens complex in Brick Township.



Authorities say four units overall sustained heavy fire damage.
