HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) - The town of Hilton Head is awaiting a permit from the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers so it can patch some eroding shoreline that’s approaching private property.
Town director of public projects Scott Liggett says Hilton Head will pay about $1 million to add near 30,000 cubic yards of sand to a 2,000-foot-long section of beach.
Liggett tells the Island Packet (https://bit.ly/1eHiNoD) the project needs to start by early April to be finished by June 30. After that, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prohibits the town from disrupting the beach because of sea turtle nesting season.
The sand will be added to beach at Ocean Point in Port Royal Plantation. The project comes about two years after a $9.8 million project to protect beach near the same area.
