GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi newspaper wants to see letters written to a federal judge in Alabama on behalf of former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd who faced sentencing for witness tampering.
The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/Oh8uRX ) its attorneys filed a motion Friday in U.S. District Court in Mobile, Ala., for copies of the letters.
In sentencing Byrd this past week, U.S. District Judge William H. Steele said he had received up to 50 letters on the former sheriff’s behalf. The judge said he had considered “all the information” before imposing the sentence.
Byrd was sentenced to six months of home confinement and six months’ probation after admitting he twice kicked in the groin a suspect in the theft of a county patrol car after he was handcuffed and “unresisting.”
