CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Alex Putman hit a shot from near halfcourt just before the buzzer to lift Kernersville Bishop McGuinness past Williamston Riverside 61-58 in the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association women’s championship game.
Putman’s shot was her only basket of Saturday’s game, helping McGuinness (29-4) win a record ninth straight state championship.
Julia Brown was named the game’s most valuable player, scoring 26 points on 11-for-19 shooting. The Lady Villains led by 13 points in the second quarter before needing Putman’s late heave to win it.
Tia Cappuccio added 11 points for McGuinness, which shot 41 percent and went just 3-for-20 from 3-point range.
Kayla Jones had 31 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals for the Knights (29-1), who shot 33 percent. Riverside scored 20 points off turnovers.
