HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism is accepting applications for a multimedia journalism workshop June 15-22 on the university’s Hattiesburg campus.
WDAM-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1kHN1PR) the workshop will focus on the Freedom Summer events of 1964.
Selected participants will study under professional journalists and the Southern Mississippi journalism faculty. They will meet with newsmakers and cover stories, produce television and radio newscasts, a newspaper and a website.
Their news coverage will focus on a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, when hundreds of volunteers came to Mississippi in 1964 to launch a voter registration drive for African Americans. The USM Center of Black Studies, the Southern Miss Association of Black Journalists and the city of Hattiesburg are sponsoring a conference from June 19-21 to commemorate Freedom Summer.
Students currently in grades 10 through 12 in Mississippi are eligible to apply for the workshop. The application deadline is May 10.
“Our goal is to give talented young people a taste of the excitement of covering real news to show them what a career in journalism is like,” said Gina Chen, assistant professor and workshop director. “This year’s workshop is particularly noteworthy because students will be covering the commemoration of Freedom Summer, an event with national significance in Mississippi’s history.”
The workshop is free to students who are selected to attend. The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the Mississippi Press Association and Raycom Media have provided funding.
Students with an interest in producing multimedia stories about multicultural issues are especially encouraged to apply.
Applications and more information are available at the School of Mass Communication and Journalism website, www.usm.edu/mcj, or by calling Chen at 228-229-2783.
