PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona environmental officials are cutting the fees for vehicle emission inspections for greater Phoenix residents.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality announced Friday that the $27.75 charge for the inspections will be $20 for metropolitan Phoenix residents who have cars and light duty trucks from 1981 or later.
The new fee will take effect July 1.
According to ADEQ, more than 1 million motorists get tested in Maricopa County each year.
The agency says Tucson residents already pay less.
ADEQ also will begin its Gas Cap Distribution Program in Maricopa and Pima counties.
The agency will issue gas caps to car owners who fail testing because of a faulty cap.
Officials say a faulty gas cap is the reason more than 75,000 vehicles fail emissions inspection every year.
