NEW YORK (AP) - For the first time since the explosion, smoke has finally stopped rising from the debris of the fallen apartment buildings in East Harlem.

But the recovery and cleanup are far from over.

All night and through dawn, a caterpillar with iron jaws continued to grab and lift smoke-and-fire blackened debris onto trucks that hauled away load after load.

On Friday, workers had reached the street level of the decimated buildings.

NTSB investigators want to reach the basements where they hope to find utility meters and gas lines for clues to the source of the fatal leak.

Around the corner on East 116th Street, storefronts are still locked shut for several blocks behind police lines.
