CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - An environmental group has served notice of a suit over discharges from a glass fiber plant in Corvallis.

The Gazette-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1lDst8n ) the Willamette River was flooding in February when a canoeist paddled up to masses of floating material near the Hollingsworth & Vose plant.

After the sighting, the company found and fixed a leak in the system that discharges treated effluent.

A company official, Cindy Frost, said it complies with its permit.

A state environmental inspector found no evidence that glass fiber had been washed into the river and said the canoeist may have seen “floating scum” in beds used to dry sludge before disposal.

Willamette Riverkeeper said it wants to discuss whether additional measures are needed to keep effluent out of the river during floods.
