HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man whose car struck and fatally injured an 11-year-old girl in her front yard after he suffered a diabetic episode has been sentenced to four years in prison.

In charging 60-year-old David Herman of the Portland suburb of Hillsboro, prosecutors alleged that he had a long history of ignoring his doctor’s orders for managing his diabetes and had suffered a driving episode once before, that time crashing into a tree.

Kylie Hornych died after the April 4, 2013, crash.

The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/CkTNOX) that Herman was charged last summer with second-degree manslaughter. He pleaded guilty Thursday in Circuit Court to criminally negligent homicide and was sentenced to four years with credit for time served. His driver’s license was revoked for life.

Herman addressed the girl’s relatives in court, telling them he was “sad and remorseful.”
