BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York man now admits that he shook a 5-month-old he was babysitting late last year, sending the infant to the hospital.

Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita III says Friday that 25-year-old James Brown of the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga (cheek-toh-WAH’-guh) faces up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty.

Authorities say Brown was babysitting Dec. 5 when he violently shook the baby for at least 10 minutes. The baby suffered bleeding to the brain and lapsed into unconsciousness. The child’s mother called an ambulance upon returning home.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 15.
