LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A proposed reduction in the number of classroom days for Lafayette Parish public school students goes against the trend among some neighboring parishes.
Lafayette Parish students are slated to be in class for 174 days this year. Under the proposed 2014-15 calendar, they would be in class for 171 days. Karen Williams, the district’s academic director, tells The Advertiser (https://bit.ly/1cYhGpF ) students still will meet the instructional minutes requirement, even with fewer class days.
Teachers would work for 182 days next year, with non-classroom days generally set aside for in-services and training. Officials are hopeful that the calendar will go into effect, although some Lafayette Parish School Board members have expressed interest in having the board approve the new calendar this spring.
Iberia Parish Superintendent Dale Henderson said students there will be in class for 178 days both this year and next. Teachers work for 182 days, Henderson said, with almost all of those extra days slated for training and in-services.
Vermilion Parish Assistant Superintendent Paul Hebert said students there are in school 178 days this year and are scheduled for 177 days next year.
The number of student days in other parts of the state is a mixed bag. For example, students in Caddo Parish will attend school for 176 days this year and next year, according to that district’s website. In Rapides Parish, like Lafayette, the 2014-15 calendar includes 171 instructional days.
