BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Interior Secretary Sally Jewell says the Crow Tribe will receive a $655,000 federal grant to help develop a hydroelectric project at the Yellowtail Afterbay Dam.
The Billings Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1imCbvL ) the project is expected to generate low-cost power for at least 3,000 homes.
Jewell announced the grant Friday during a visit to the Crow Reservation. It is part of a $3.2 million award for 21 tribal energy and mineral projects.
The Crow Tribe’s share will allow tribal officials to complete the technical, environmental, engineering and economic analyses for the 8- to 12-megawatt project.
The Crow Tribe Water Settlement Act introduced by U.S. Sen. Jon Tester authorized the tribe to develop hydropower at the dam.
