ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Albuquerque public school district has fired the head of its police force and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department confirms that it’s now conducting a related criminal investigation.

The district board decided Friday morning to remove Steve Tellez as chief due to what the district calls a “personnel issue.”

However, sheriff’s Sgt. Aaron Williamson says the investigation centers on missing ammunition.

Williamson says more information should be released after the investigation is completed in about a week.

Tellez became chief about four years ago.

The school district says Deputy Chief Steve Gallegos will serve as acting chief.
