NEW YORK (AP) - The devastation from the East Harlem disaster is evident in the shattered windows a block from the explosion site.

Christian figurines sit amid shards of glass at a Park Avenue “botanica” that sells folk medicine and religious items.

The neighborhood north of 96th Street between Fifth Avenue and the Harlem River is known as Spanish Harlem.

For decades, immigrants from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, their children and grandchildren, have been the heart of the working-class community.

The area is now slowly becoming gentrified.
