OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A resolution that calls for a statewide vote of the people on whether to issue $120 million in bonds to repair Oklahoma’s nearly 100-year-old Capitol has been approved by the state House.
The House voted 59-31 Thursday for the measure and sent it to the Senate for a vote.
The Senate passed a related bill last month that authorizes a $160 million bond issue to pay for repairs to the Capitol. That measure is pending in the House.
The author of the House bill, Republican House Speaker Jeff Hickman of Fairview, says the referendum proposal offers an opportunity to pursue Capitol repairs if House members cannot agree on the Senate-passed measure.
Problems with the Capitol include antiquated plumbing, electrical and fire protection systems.
