WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - The Maryland State Board of Elections is rejecting a candidate’s request to place the word, “Conservative,” beside his name on the Carroll County Commissioners Republican primary ballot.
The Carroll County Times (https://bit.ly/1kmr2et ) reported in its Thursday edition that the board rejected incumbent Richard Rothschild’s petition.
The board also denied Democratic judicial candidate Neil Ridgely’s petition to add the word, “Sustainability,” to his ballot name. Ridgely says he made the request to draw attention to the unfairness of Rothschild’s petition.
The elections board allows candidates to use alternate ballot names if they can show they are generally known by that name in press accounts or everyday encounters.
Both men filed affidavits stating that “Conservative” and “Sustainability” are names by which they are generally known in the community.
