LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A former Texas Tech student has been sentence to 40 years in prison after admitting to killing a next-door neighbor and setting fire to her apartment.

State District Judge John McClendon sentenced Austin Hasten in Lubbock on Wednesday. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (https://bit.ly/1gv9Zm8) reports the 23-year-old Lubbock man must serve 20 years of the term before becoming eligible for parole.

Lubbock police say Hasten stabbed Michelle Terry to death in January 2013 and set fire to her apartment. Police later found Hasten with blood on his clothes and smelling of gasoline. Terry’s driver’s license was found in his pants pocket.
