INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - People will be allowed to have guns in school parking lots under a proposal that won approval in the Illinois General Assembly.
The bill passed the Senate 38-10 and the House 75-24 Thursday night. The measure now goes to Gov. Mike Pence for consideration.
Supporters say the policy would protect parents from unknowingly committing a felony if they bring guns with them when picking up their children, although some school officials question the frequency of those offenses.
The group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America says access to guns near schools could make school shootings more likely.
The proposal came amid increased scrutiny of school safety after a December 2012 shooting killed 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut.
