ZILWAUKEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it’s conducting a 950-acre prescribed burn at the Crow Island State Game Area, north of Saginaw.

The DNR says the fire that was underway Thursday afternoon is in the east unit of the game area, which is in Saginaw County’s Zilwaukee Township.

The department says the burn “is intended to improve habitat for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife by reducing cattail debris.”

The DNR says that prescribed burns often simulate the benefits of natural fires.

Department wildlife division supervisor Joe Robinson says reducing the amount of cattail cover will allow managers to create a half-and-half mix of vegetation and open water that’s attractive to waterfowl.
