JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Biologists say a recent count has them encouraged about the future of the moose population in Jackson Hole after years of declines.

Volunteers and biologists recently counted 275 moose in the valley, an increase of almost 40 animals compared to last year.

The count included a large number of young moose - 37 calves for every 100 cows. That number is up considerably from recent years.

Biologists also note that moose habitat appears to be in good shape in the Jackson Hole area.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (https://bit.ly/1fu3oYc ) the local moose population has declined by some 85 percent since the 1980s. The decline began before wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone in the mid-1990s.
