SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah lawmakers have advanced a bill creating tax credits for employers hiring homeless people.
The House Monday narrowly passed the bill 38-36.
Salt Lake City Democrat Rep. Brian King brings the proposal for such tax credits of up to $2,000 each.
Workers trying to gain a foothold out of homelessness would need to be employed for at least nine months in a row for their employers to qualify. The workers would also need to have earned at least $4,000.
But there’s a limited budget for the credits, at about $100,000.
The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1lrt2lD) King has brought the bill for the past three years. But it has a lower price tag this time.
The bill is modeled on a similar program in Florida.
It now advances to the Senate.
