SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A Sioux Falls businesswoman has appealed a decision by the city Planning Commission to approve a permit for a proposed homeless shelter.

Marian Rieffer, who owns a discount store across from the proposed site, said the shelter would be too close to schools and a public swimming pool, and she’s also worried about crime, the Argus Leader newspaper reported (https://argusne.ws/1fojIyd ).

“I think they need to move these people away from bars and away from children,” Rieffer said.

The Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls plans to spend more than $1 million buying and renovating an empty warehouse for the shelter. The diocese says the Bishop Dudley Hospitality Center should reduce problems with vagrancy, panhandling and public drunkenness.

“This is not a silver bullet, but hopefully it will be more effective and encouraging for individuals who are in need of charity,” Diocese Chancellor Matt Althoff said.

The diocese is prepared for an appeal and applauds the fact there is a process for people to voice their concerns, Althoff said.

The City Council plans a March 18 public hearing. Most council members have already indicated they support the plan.
