KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan University is getting ready to launch a center to develop and promote better public and non-motor transportation.
A Wednesday event is planned in Kalamazoo for the Transportation Research Center for Livable Communities, which is funded by a $1.4 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant. Money for the center, which is one of 33 being created nationwide, was announced last year.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1eo2DjP ) the university will be the lead institution behind the center.
The center will focus on improving public transit systems and alternative transportation; providing better and safer pedestrian and bicycle networks; and enhancing transportation accessibility for children, people with disabilities, older adults and low-income residents.
The grant is for one year with the possibility of being renewed for three more years.
