JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Jackson police are asking for the public’s help to identify a body found burned beyond recognition outside a vehicle.

Police say fire officials were called Monday evening to a report of a brush fire in Jackson. Police said in a statement that firefighters found a burning car in a field and discovered the body right outside the vehicle after extinguishing the blaze.

Police say it appears to be the body of a male. The car appeared to be a newer model four-door Pontiac Grand Prix.

Sgt. Chris Chestnut told The Jackson Sun (https://bit.ly/1lSo6sZ) that the death is suspicious due to the circumstances, but there was nothing immediately to suggest a homicide.

Police say witnesses told officers a man in a black Grand Prix had been driving in the area earlier in the day.

Neighbors told the newspaper they tried to help after hearing a boom come from the field.

“All you saw was the outline of the car and flames coming out of the windows,” Markettus Broyld said. “I couldn’t get to it. It was so hot.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Jackson Police Department.
