GARY, Ind. (AP) - The city of Gary plans to work with residents and other agencies to come up come up with strategies to improve schools and education in the city.
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced Monday that the National League of Cities and the U.S. Department of Education signed a memorandum of understanding outlining three goals for cities to focus on: early childhood education, afterschool and postsecondary attainment.
The city of Gary will host a community conversation about creating a network of support for the kindergarten through 12th grade education system in Gary. The support network will include afterschool programs, mentoring programs, summer programs and other efforts that would help students do well in school.
