NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - A Southwest Florida man charged with six counts of first-degree murder in the slaughter of his family has been found incompetent to proceed.

The Naples Daily News (https://bit.ly/1oFFqP5 ) reports that Mesac Damas was found incompetent by two evaluating doctors.

This means there’s a halt to proceedings leading up to a trial scheduled for this fall.

Court officials say an April 7 case management conference has been scheduled to map out future court dates

Authorities say the 34-year-old Damas is accused of cutting the throats of his wife and five young children in September 2009.

In emails to the newspaper, Damas said he was “possessed by demons” at the time of the killings. He said he’s become a “new creature in Christ” since.
