HONOLULU (AP) - Police say it appears a man and woman found unconscious inside a Jeep Wrangler stranded in mud at Kaena Point suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.
Investigators say it looks like they were trying to get the Jeep out of a mud bog. Bystanders found them unconscious Saturday in the closed vehicle stuck in about three feet of water.
KHON-TV reports the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating because the Jeep was in an off-road area where vehicle aren’t allowed.
DLNR Director William Aila says the understaffed department is having trouble citing drivers who go mud bogging at Kaena Point.
Hawaii News Now reports the 33-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were listed in critical condition. Authorities believe they were inside the Jeep for at least an hour.
