LAFAYETTE, N.Y. (AP) - A man on parole after being convicted of causing the death of a state trooper during a high-speed chase has been charged with beating a dachshund to death at a central New York home.
State police say James Carncross was arrested on Monday and charged with animal cruelty for the fatal beating last Friday in the town of Pompey, 12 miles southeast of Syracuse. He was sent to jail pending a parole review.
Carncross was convicted in December 2006 of aggravated criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving for a high-speed chase that led to a crash that killed Trooper Craig Todeschini.
He was sentenced to seven years in state prison, consecutive to an earlier sentence for violating probation. He was released on parole Jan. 2.
