SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Residents of Green Valley Lake are on edge after home burglaries in the tiny San Bernardino County hamlet surged more than 300 percent over the last year.

The San Bernardino Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1g19jnw ) local drug addicts are taking advantage of vacant vacation homes in the secluded mountain community, which has only about 400 full-time residents. The nearest sheriff’s substation is more than a half-hour drive away.

Sheriff’s Capt. Rick Ells says there were 32 home burglaries in the last four months - compared with just seven between Nov. 1, 2012, and March 1, 2013.

And residents suspect there may be unreported crimes, because some homeowners don’t return to their cabins until summer.

In response, the Sheriff’s Department has pulled two deputies off patrol elsewhere to focus on Green Valley Lake.
