SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Inmates in a southeast South Dakota penitentiary are caring for a group of orphaned puppies.

KELO-TV (https://bit.ly/1ofkQES ) reports the puppies have been fostered for about three weeks by inmates at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

The station reports the puppies arrived at the facility when they were five days old. The dogs have a feeding scheduled and inmates are assigned different shifts to care for them.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections and the Humane Society have an agreement that allows the presence of the dogs at the penitentiary.

The corrections department says the program helps teach basic obedience commands to the dogs. Minimum-security inmates train the animals through a routine of commands. When the dogs finish their training, the Humane Society puts them up for adoption.
